Q: I can’t find Mental Ray in Autodesk Maya

If you can’t select ,Mental Ray as a renderer in your drop down menu under your render options ( see below ) Then it is most likely that your Mental Ray option isn’t loaded in your Plugin Manager


To solve this problem go to Window – Settings/Preferences – Plug-in Manager


Scroll down in the menu and look for Mayatomr.mll


Check both Loaded and Autoload. Mental Ray should now be loaded and you should be able to use mental Ray.

  1. I have 1 problem with the plugin.When i use the materials of mental ray for example mia_material_x1(the 1 im trying to use to make glass things like glass cups etc) says “The plug-in does not support the following material types:
    Material mia_material_x_passes1 will be exported as a grey Lambert material.”


    1. Hi Razor,

      Based on what you are saying I assume you wanted to export your object as an FBX with the Mia shaders. Here are two options to fix your problem; 1. Update your FBX plugin version or 2. Try exporting an OBJ
