How to properly model a glass of Wine in Maya 2016

I get a lot of feedback from people saying that it is hard to create a good looking wine glass holding fluid. Topics such as reflection and refraction, caustics etc. But mainly modeling issues. So how do you properly model a wineglass ? How do you create the wine inside ?
